I would give one of my arms to never have to deal with Displayport again. And not just with Dells - my home monitor is an LG and my computer is custom built, and it does the same thing every now and then. At some point, the Displayport screen goes black and either has to be unplugged and plugged back in for it to work or just goes black and has to be replaced. We have exactly the same problem with most of the Dells we have at some point - whether they be 7010s, or 9020s, or some other model. I've had these on my desk for the past 3-4 years this way and no issues. I'm typing this on a seven year old Optiplex 9020, using THREE monitors off the onboard ing the dual DP + the single VGA to dual 24" Dell DP monitors and a single 27" VGA Acer monitor. Ideally, you'd use one monitor with a DP and one with a VGA port on this configuration and avoid adapters altogether, but I know that's not always possible, especially if you have a surplus of older monitors on hand. Also use to validate any tempting off-brand items with surprisingly good reviews to make sure they are authentic reviews (I've noted that the majority of high ranking offbrand phone charging cables that come in 3 to 5 packs are massively bloated with fake reviews). Check the reviews, especially the bad reviews, for the issues you are already facing. Make sure whatever you are using for your DP to VGA conversion is an "active" adapter, not passive, and buy a brand you've actually heard of. I had almost this exact problem with a Dell Precision 3050 (MUCH newer!) using dual DP to identical DP monitors, and the problem was a cheap DP cable. There are TONS of DisplayPort (DP) cables on the market that do not meet specifications, and they can be problematic. But again, most on amazon and even places like BestBuy aren't actually certified even if the packaging says so, unfortunately.

I've had good luck with CableMatters in the past, but it's been a while since I've purchased from them.ĮDIT: Just to clarify, because I realized a few minutes later this probably wasn't clear, buy a small batch of really high quality cables, test with them, if the problem goes away, the problem is low quality/counterfeit cables, but you can still use a lower-end DisplayPort cable for actual production, just need one better than what you have now. V1.2 is usually plenty for 1080p office users, assuming it's actually v1.2. I would suggest ordering a small batch of DP 1.4 (or better) cables from a reputable distributor and see if that helps. Good DisplayPort cables are actually really hard to find, and I'd say a good 75% of the ones available on amazon are not up to the spec they say they are, and even buying from the same listing multiple times has had mixed results for me :(
We've had this issue with a few of our Dell docks with certain brands of cables. If they've got 7010s and monitors with only VGA, I'm willing to bet they don't :/ Note: DVI to DisplayPort cable adapters 23NVR work in this configuration. You probably already thought of this, but do these monitors maybe support DisplayPort daisy chaining?
